In Ireland, the doves are released at celebrations throughout Ireland, symbolizing the good fortune that is to follow.
The Dove is a quintessential symbol of peace. They land with a flourish of white tail-feathers on stones of a darker grey than themselves - the limestone chippings of the street. Think of it as some ancestral columbiform gene at work, alert to any echo of parched village paths in the shade of acacia groves.
The inspiration for the Celtic swirl design by Martin Croke came from Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament that was created c. 800 AD. The illustrations and ornamentation of the Book of Kells surpass that of other Insular Gospel books in extravagance and complexity. The decoration combines traditional Christian iconography with the ornate swirling motifs typical of Celtic art. Figures of humans, animals and mythical beasts, together with Celtic knots and interlacing patterns in vibrant colors, enliven the manuscript's pages.
The Book of Kells is on display at Trinity College Library in Dublin.
This beautiful dated ornament is tastefully gift boxed in an elegant red Cashs gift box. Ornament comes with an emerald colored ribbon, and a removable silver 2024 tag. Designed by Martin Croke in Waterford, Ireland. Handmade.
